[AlpacaTalk] pneumonia in alpaca
Hi Wendy,
well, I am a little confused. Not terribly uncommon :))
Did your vet listen to their chests and give you a diagnosis of pneumonia?
Listening to the chest for fluid, and Xray are the only ways to really diagnose pneumonia. We have had it here before. Nuflor, probiotics (not given at the same time as the antibiotic) and cuppage (sp) by cupping the hands and banging the ribcage on either side (I'm having a hard time finding proper terminology for that procedure!) to loosen the phlegm was our treatment.
Then a follow up Xray to make sure we got it all.
Perhaps you could get your vet to consult with a camelid vet? I am concerned that he wants you to wait until your animals go off their feed before treating them.... for whatever. By the time an alpaca goes off it's feed there is usually something very wrong with them and they can crash very quickly by then if it is serious enough.
Also, I would wonder how more than one alpaca could get pneumonia- if it is your whole herd that has symptoms, or more than 2 I would suspect something else. It sounds like you are wondering if your new llamas brought something home with them, I would wonder to if it were me.
Are they all current on their vaccinations, worming, and have they been BVD tested?
I know I gave you a lot to think about, if you want to call me, I am home all day! :))
Take care, and you are right to be concerned methinks!
Slainte~

pneumonia in alpaca

I have 8 alpacas and 8 llamas. I brought home 2 pregnant llamas about
10 days ago. After about 6 days my alpacas and llamas got runny noses.
I had my vet check them (he is more of a cattle vet but does know some
about alpacas) and he said to wait and see if they go off of their
feed. I went out yesterday and had a girl off of her feed and laying
down breathing hard, runny eyes and nose. I also had a male llama with
the same symptoms. My vet came out and gave me Nufor? 3 cc/100 lbs. I
asked him if I should dose all of my alpacas and llamas and he said to
wait until they go off of their food. My girl alpaca is better today,
my llama not so good. Can anyone tell me if they have had this problem
or what you would suggest about going ahead and dosing my other animals?
Thank you,
Wendy
