Hi Emaly,
I am not sure about requirements for ALSA, but I would imagine that they
have to be registered. I am certain (well almost certian) that they have to
be ARI certified for an AOBA certified alpaca show. 4H shows do not require
certification unless the local chapter deems it so.
Just like llama shows, each alpaca show will have its own requirements for
vet checks, BVD testing, TB and Brucellosis. Some of these may be imposed by
the state the show is in. Almost all will be spelled out in the registration
forms for the show. You will usually find them more expensive than llama
shows.
Classes are the same although the age groupings of the exhibitors might vary
a little. There is showmanship, obstacle, and PR. Pack classes might be held
at some shows for alpacas, but I have never seen one except for 4H. Alpacas
could be used for driving a cart, but I have never seen that either.
Is that what you were asking?

Thanks. Do you know anything about the entry requirements? That's what I'm
most worried about. Emaly

Hi Emaly,
You treat them exactly the same although the size of the obstacles might be
a bit different due to stature differences between llamas and alpacas.

Subject: [AlpacaTalk] performance classes & ALSA entry requirements
Hello,
I am new to the world of alpacas- I already have one male and will be
getting another one next weekend. I have been involved in llama performance
classes, and want to train my new alpacas for obstacles as well. Any tips
or advice? I have a lot of obstacles and experience training llamas, but
don't know much about training alpacas. Also, I was looking at the ALSA
handbook, and it says that alpacas (and llamas) don't have to be registered
to show in performance and youth classes. It also says that they should
have a vet note certifying that they are gelded. Will this work in place of
an ARI certificate? The young male is not old enough to be gelded, so I
won't be able to get a vet note saying that he is gelded. Is this a
problem? Any information you can give will be greatly appreciated- I know
absolutely nothing about training and showing alpacas, but look forward to
it! Thanks, Emaly
