Hi Judith,

Thanks so much for your suggestions...I signed up for the AlpacaNation Forum but made a mistake of putting in my full name as the user name. I don't think the user name was supposed to be our own name? When I sign in under my own name as the user, I get the message that it's invalid. I went back to change my username and I received the message that my email address was already in use. Any suggestions on how to get in there to change the user name?

The forum looks like a very rich resource of Alpaca information!

Hi Mary -- welcome to AlpacaTalk, and -- as Marianne noted -- there are other groups you might want to consider checking into as well. (As Moderator, I'd be remiss if I didn't suggest you try the AlpacaNation Forum as well -- it's well organized, has lots of diversity of opinion which give you a broad perspective on the industry, and has some pretty terrific members! Go to www.alpacanation.com/forum to check it out). Also check out the AlpacaNation library for materials that can be printed out (or read online, if you have good eyesight!)

It looks to me from the map that you're just a bit below Harrisburg, PA. You might make it a point to go to the annual MaPaca show there; it's a huge show, with lots of farms represented, and usually has great educational programming that you might enjoy taking. It takes place every April. There are other shows and events too that you can look into to help educate yourself about the industry (in fact, I was just at the Alpaca Heritage Events Pen Sale in Mullica Hill, NJ last weekend -- that's probably not too far from you, and is another annual event you might want to look into).

Have you visited any farms yet? There are some really nice farms not far from you, so you'll have lots of opportunity to visit, meet folks and get your hands on a wide variety of alpaca fleeces. Once you get "conformation" down (and that's not too hard), the biggest aspect of education is fiber. Make sure you learn all you can about fleece before you invest in anything, because whatever breeding program you develop hinges on your understanding of the fiber market.

Happy to have you with us!

Judith
