Re: [AlpacaTalk] Female fiber/pet animals wanted

You found 2 of them so we may get lucky also.

In this breeders market, soon to develop into a fiber market, there is no such thing as a healthy pet fiber female.
We started our farm with two show quality breeding females and two so called pet quality breeding females that had minor defects that kept them from winning ribbons at shows.
One had a deformed tail that the vets said resulted from frostbite.
The seller let us have her as pet quality because of that minor fault..
That dam has had five show quality alpacas in five years. Two of them are true black females, two of them are silver gray, one boy and one girl. One is a light fawn boy who is going to be our next top herdsire. He looks exactly like that boy who sold for 600, 000.00 and has 22 micron fiber at the age of four. He has one perfect light fawn boy on the ground.

His deformed tail dam is eight years old and is valued at ten thousand dollars on the market, but I would not sell her unless I am forced to.Lets face it, if a dam has good fiber, and is not crippled, and can have crias, she is valuable.
Perfect conformation crias can come for dams that have some minor defect, and genetic defects like buck teeth, cow hocks, knock knees, etc are going to surface in any line and can be bred out by selective breeding.
My best herdsire was of the Silversmith line.
He got cow hocks from some ancestor, but I bred him to top quality fiber and conformation females and got 14 show and herdsire quality crias, with no faults.
The know it all big farm breeders will flame and tell me that I am a bad breeder for my practices, but I will laugh about it all the way to the bank.
I am even going to use a perfect white male (except for blue flecks in his eyes)
for a herdsire in a couple of years, and have already sold a perfect white boy just like him.

If you want alpacas for fiber and for companions, try getting some geldings that were gelded before two years old.
We have four geldings like that who can stay with females and never harass them.

We are located in KY. After being llama owners for years, we decided that we would like a few alpacas. Now we have 2 and are looking for some pet/fiber quality females. They are few and far between. Most we have found can no longer breed.
They must be good quality animals that can still reproduce.
