RE: [Alpacasite] We have a new vet and could use a little help

Gary,

We had the exact same issues with finding a vet when we started.. I think
it's great to give your vet the blue surgical book, the other alpaca book
that references appropriate doses of meds and what ever other books you
think appropriate. I'd also suggest you have the same set of Books
available for your vet in your barn. You'll find your vet won't always
remember to grab the books on his way out the door. We found that having
the books in the barn saved time because the vet wouldn't have to go back to
the office to research the symptoms and get back to me. We both did the
necessary research right there in the barn. I'd take one book and he'd tell
me what to look for while he went through another.

You may also want to find a sort of mentor for your vet. We found another
vet some 2,000 miles away who had Camelid experience and was willing to
consult with my vet as needed. Here's one example. We had a cria born with
a low IGG. My vet was going to do an IV plasma transfusion. I said I
believe alpaca people had recommended doing the plasma by IP rather than IV.
We called the other vet and this vet walked my vet through how to administer
the plasma by IP. This particular incident happened way back in 1999.
Since then my vet has provided the same service to other vets as well.

If you decide to find another vet to help yours I'd suggest you stick with
the same time zone. You're in CA? I don't know exactly where in CA you are
but there is a vet that services the UC Davis and Sacramento area named
Danny something. Last I heard I think he's also Jan Davis' vet as well. He
might be willing to help your vet if he doesn't service your area. I'm sure
Jan would be willing to give you his name.

Good luck,

Ana

Subject: [Alpacasite] We have a new vet and could use a little help

We've had significant problems getting an alpaca vet in our area.
All of our local vets have busy small animal practices and the one
vet we have that will work on alpacas has been harder and harder to
get out for ranch visits and is even hard to get scheduled for
office visits. Getting her out for an emergency is "cross your
fingers".

A new large animal vet has joined our local practice and has some
minimal experience with llamas. I'm asking the group to help me
encourage this new vet to learn more about alpacas. We're in the
process of trying to get her to attend a nearby 2 day vet symposium.

I've read many posts consisting of information from handouts and non-
copy-write protected material. If you have such material and are
willing to send me a copy, please reply privately by email (
gary@greystonemanor.biz ) and send it, (email if you have it
electronically). I'll screen for duplicates and collect it (and or
print the electronic formats) for delivery to our new vet.

If anyone has old copies or duplicates of copy-write protected
material, I'd like to hear about them. If I'm offered duplicates, I
will do an update post listing what is available and try to put the
donor and whoever wants it together.

Also if people have URLs (links) to non-copy-write protected
material that hey think would be useful for a new alpaca vet, I will
download it and put it on a disk for her.

Thanks,
May all of your cria be healthy, prize winners with 10+ pound
shearing weights,
