Re: [Alpacasite] Treating a cold?
Hi Gayle,
The fact that the symptoms are unilateral implies something other than a cold. I think I would involve a vet. If alpacas even get colds (not had any here in our 9 years), it is more systemic and would affect both nostrils.
The fact that this started with an eye makes me wonder about a foreign body there. We had a gucky eye that did not respond to ophthalmic ointment. The vet was out for something else at the same time and with me having a decent hold of the alpaca, he could take a good look. What he found was sort of amazing. Literally buried in the space well below the lid margin and the eye, was a piece of straw/hay that was well covered in gunk and one inch long! As you can imagine, the eye cleared up pretty quickly after that!
Other possibilities to consider would be:
A tear duct infection
Sinus infection on just that side
Nasal bots (a bot fly that lays its eggs which hatch and infest the nasal cavity and posterior pharynx of the host)
Usually when the snot (sorry to be so descriptive here) gets thick and colorful, (yellowish, green, or bloody), it's time to consider calling the vet and perhaps starting an antibiotic.
Good Luck,
Laurel

Subject: [Alpacasite] Treating a cold?
Hi All,
Does anyone know how to treat what appears to be a cold in a llama or
alpaca? I have a yearling male who had discharge from one eye yesterday. I
cleaned it up with saline and put some opthimolic (sp) ointment in it.
This morning it had reappeared and the nostril on that same side is full of,
well, snot! I have an herbal remedy from 7M Farm but having never
encountered this before, don't really know how to proceed. Thanks in
advance for any suggestions.
