[Alpacasite] Re: Showing Juveniles without removal of amniotic cria fleece
Heidi, nothing personal intended...just a reality-check on the shrink-wrapping. I get the Digest and had not seen Ruthanne's excellent answer before I posted. I think all of us can agree that whatever they are born with, it improves the usability of the fiber if those tips are removed. I shear all my spring/early summer crias and will continue to do so...not for the show ring, but for the skirting table!
Cameron Holt had a slightly different reasoning for this in his lecture on Sunday morning at AOBA. He said the birth fleece is normally mostly primary fiber and the secondary fiber takes over later. He also advocated getting rid of the birth fiber, as it is not consistent with the rest of the tui growth. [I think I got that right, but if anyone else was there, please correct or embellish.]
