[Alpacasite] Re: Question Regarding Eataholic Cria- - 'stripping' teats

I think you are right on there Tim about the colostrum and timing. You would never want to take all of the colostrum from a new cria, but I think (my thoughts, and our particular vet's) that there is more than just a few ounces of colostrum available on day one. We didn't have to supplement a brand new cria until last year. First time in 6 years, and we had to start the first day as the cria was too weak to suckle. Thanks to this advice from our vet, we had milked out mom a bit right away when we thought there might be trouble and were able to have the vet tube in some of mom's colostrum and then we milked her every day and supplemented what we got with some milk until he developed a good, strong suckle, about a week later. We didn't have to do plasma, he maintained a good Igg with this intervention. It is important to note though that mom was a really great milker.

Since then we milk each mom that we can just in case. Our vet encourages this, and we have dubbed her "The Alpaca Milker" because she can get the most in the shortest amount of time :) I however, am really terrible at it! But, I am the one that has to do it, of course! LOL, can't see my husband under there, all 6' 2" of him.
Take good care,
Rachelle

Rachelle,

I do not have any concrete evidence but I suspect that the most
colostrum rich milk is likely to be the very first few ounces that the
dam produces. This I would guess is best to get inside the cria right
away (stomach lining closing in 24 hours and all). Would seem to me the
most logical thing would be to have the cria nurse naturally and get as
much of this rich milk as soon as possible.

Always learning. I will ask my vet and see what he thinks. Maybe we
should be doing things differently. We've only has to supplement one
cria and it was nearly 3 months old. And this only lasted for 2 weeks.

As always, thanks for your input.
