This article (also linked from a spa*mmy blog) seems focuses on the trend of alpaca farming becoming popular (this paper is focused on the northeast coast, so I'm assuming thats where they've noticed the trend... the alpacabusinesssecrets guy is from New Hampshire as well).
Here are some interesting excerpts:
"According to the Alpaca Owners and Breeders Association, the price for a female alpaca can range between $12,000 and $25,000 in North America.
Females with unique attributes have been known to sell for as much as $50,000 or more. Proven, top-quality herd sires typically sell for $20,000 to $50,000, and the highest quality males have sold in excess of $150,000."
